Bangladesh - our sweet little homeland. You can never express a country in mere words, because it's not just a land with geographical boundaries but much more. However, we'd like to present some statistical information about our country.

Bangladesh is a low-lying country with a total area of 91,696 square miles or 1,47,570 square kilometers. It stretches latitudinal between 20°34´ and 26°38´ north and longitudinally between 88°01´ and 92°41´ east. It is mostly surrounded by Indian Territory except for a small strip in the southeast by the Myanmar. Bay of Bengal lies on the south. Its beach is the longest in the world (98 miles), known as Queen of Beaches. Most of the country's area is relatively flat lying in the deltaic plain of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna river system. The only significant uplands are in the northeast and southeast of the country with average elevation of 244 meters and 610 meters respectively. The country is covered with a network of rivers and canals forming a maze of interconnecting channels.

Bangladesh was once a part of Pakistan, the country born in 1947 on the basis of religion. But since its birth, Bangladeshis (the then East Pakistanis) were being oppressed in every sphere of life by the rulers of Pakistan. The language movement in 1952 was the first sign of protest against the oppression. Finally we gained freedom in 16th December, 1971 through a sanguinary war lasting for nine months and costing the lives of 3 million people.

Bangladesh has a tropical monsoon climate marked by sweltering temperatures and high humidity. The country has mainly four seasons, the winter (Dec-Feb), summer (Mar-May), monsoon (Jun-Sep) and autumn (Oct-Nov). During summer and monsoon tropical cyclones, storms and tidal bores are not uncommon.

The population of Bangladesh is about 130 million. Majority of population are Muslims. Hindus, Buddhists and Christians make up 13 percent of the entire population. Over 98 percent of the people speak Bangla (Bengali).

The lowest administrative unit is the union run by an elected union council. Each union comprises about 20,000 inhabitants and about 8-10 unions cluster into an Upazilla. Government services are concentrated at the Upazilla level. There are about 492 Upazilla in Bangladesh. Several Upazilla form a district. The total number of districts stands at 64. The entire country is broadly divided into six administrative divisions, namely, Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet. Dhaka is the capital of the country. Chittagong is considered as the trade capital.
